From musical beginnings, to becoming a swimming champion and Hollywood sex symbol, Annette Kellerman’s story and spirit is one that inspired millions.
Born in 1886, Annette Kellerman was always ahead of her time. When a childhood illness saw her take up swimming as therapy, she discovered an ability that led to her becoming an Australian champion and attempting to cross the English Channel at only 18 years of age.
Scandalising the public with a one-piece swimming costume that exposed her legs and arms, Annette’s promotion of the outfit changed fashion forever and popularised the sport for women who were empowered to wear more liberating outfits.
Although Annette also went on to find Hollywood fame, her Annette’s greatest achievements are her promotion of health, fitness and independence for women, living out her later years right here on the Gold Coast.
